What are FAT/NTFS partitions?

A hard disk partition is a defined storage medium on a hard drive. Most Operating Systems allow users to divide a hard disk into multiple partitions and make one physical hard disk into several smaller partitions to work in effect. Once a disk is divided into several partitions, directories and files of different categories will be stored in different partitions. And the most common-used file systems are:

FAT, short for File Allocation Table, including FAT12, FAT16, FAT32, is a table that the Operating System uses to locate files on a disk. Due to fragmentation, a file may be divided into many sections that are scattered around the disk. The FAT keeps track of all these pieces. The FAT volume is divided into four areas: the boot record, the File Allocation Tables, the root directory and the data area.

NTFS, short for New Technology File System, is the standard file system of Windows NT and its descendants Windows 2000, Windows XP and Windows Server 2003. Unlike FAT, NTFS does not use an allocation table but stores information about any file directly with the file. NTFS files or folders shared on a network can be accessed by other Operating Systems. Advantages of NTFS over FAT include faster access to files, more efficient information storage (for example, through a smaller cluster size), better data recovery, integrated file compression, larger disk partitions, and better file security.

Tips for recovering FAT/NTFS partitions

I was impressed that one guy whose computer was attacked by a virus and the NTFS partition failed to work ran here and there on the internet for NTFS partition recovery. At last Partition Table Doctor made his day.

For some kind of luck, with the reminding of the user guide, this guy remembered that he once backed up the partition table on another external hard drive, so he ran this program, and used the key feature: Restore Partition Table, he successfully solved his broken partition problem and recovered the NTFS partition. It is the same of recovering FAT partition.

Restore Partition Table

Yes, he is lucky. What if there is no partition table backed up? Partition Table Doctor is still with another powerful feature Rebuild Partition Table to recover FAT/NTFS partition.

Rebuild Partition Table

Just run the software, check that there are two modes to do a FAT/NTFS partition recovery: Auto mode will automatically save every partition found without process control within search processing. The Auto Mode process is the same in most situations. The Interactive mode allows you to select each partition found in Partition Table Doctor manually. When rebuilding the partition table in Auto mode and errors occurring switch to the Interactive mode. Searched partitions will be displayed on screen in time sequence within search processing. Then a completely same partition table built finished.

Besides FAT/NTFS partition recovery, Partition Table Doctor also supports Linux EXT2, EXT3, and Linux SWAP partition recovery under Windows and DOS.

Certainly, to recover those lost, delete, damaged or corrupted FAT/NTFS/EXT2/EXT3/SWAP partition, to a larger extent, is to recover and rescue data on the problem partitions, that is, data recovery always comes first for most people, so do not forget to backup data any time.
